When Football Club Internazionale Milano was founded on the evening of 9 March 1908, a damp and cold Monday, Roberto Fronte turned 15. Born on Thursday 9 March 1893 in Milan, Fronte was a defender, and he probably read about the founding of the club in the local paper ‘La Lombardia’, which published a few lines about the event on Wednesday 11 March 1908. According to the history books, Fronte came through the youth ranks before playing for the first team that won Inter’s first Scudetto in 1909/10. He played 25 matches for the Nerazzurri before vanishing without trace.
Silvio Pietroboni was probably sleeping, or crying, or who knows what, on the evening of 9 March 1908. He was just four years old, having been born on Wednesday 9 March 2004 in Milan. He went on to become a defensive midfielder and made his Inter debut at the age of 17 in 1921, in a 6-0 defeat to Legnano. He made his final appearance (194th) for Inter a decade later, in a 3-1 defeat to Casale when the club was playing under the name of Ambrosiana. Pietroboni scored 9 Nerazzurri goals and played 11 times for the Nazionale, but made just one appearance in his only Scudetto-winning season at Inter in 1929/30. He died in 1987 at the age of 83.
Inter turned 32 when Orazio Rancati was born on Saturday 9 March 1940 in Morbegno, Sondrio province. A midfielder, Rancati wore black and blue for two seasons, scoring 4 goals in 13 appearances. He made his Serie A debut for Inter against Fiorentina in 1959 and played his last match for the club against Birmingham City in the Fairs Cup in 1961. After Inter, Rancati played for Reggiana and Civitanovese.
When Youri Djorkaeff was born on Saturday 9 March 1968 in Lyon, France, Inter was celebrating its 60th anniversary. He followed in his father’s footsteps (Jean Djorkaeff was a successful defender before becoming a coach), starting out at Grenoble, and drawing attention to himself at Strasbourg before showing his greatness at Monaco and PSG. Youri joined Inter in the summer of 1996 and played 127 matches for the Nerazzurri over three seasons, winning the 1997/98 UEFA Cup in Paris. He scored 39 goals for Inter, including one against Roma on 5 January 1997 which is widely regarded as one of the finest goals in football history.
On Inter’s 67th anniversary on Sunday 9 March 1975, Juan Sebastian Veron was born in La Plata, Argentina. The midfielder, who scored four times in 74 appearances for the Nerazzurri, winning a Scudetto, an Italian Cup and an Italian Super Cup with the Nerazzurri, celebrates his 32nd birthday today.
To Inter, and all those born on 9 March yesterday, today and tomorrow, and to all Interisti, Happy Birthday!
